Kellie Tatum has been selected as the 2024-2025 Tulsa Virtual Academy Middle School Teacher of the Year!

This is Kellie's 19th year teaching in Tulsa Public Schools, and her fifth year at TVA where she teaches 6th through 8th grade math. We asked Kellie a few questions to learn more about her and her time at TPS.

What do you look forward to most each school year? 

I love seeing my students who have been with me since they were in 6th grade and meeting new students that join our school. This year's 8th grade class is the first group of students that I have taught since they were 5th graders, so I have gotten to know them and their families really well.  

What are you most proud of as a teacher? 

I love building relationships with my students and their families.  I have the unique opportunity to teach them for multiple years and I think creating those relationships helps the students because they know that I communicate my high expectations for my class to not only the students but also to the parents and so when issues come up the parents feel comfortable coming to me about different situations their students may be facing.  

What do you love about your school?  

TVA is amazing!  I love the people I work with. They all have a heart for education and seeing our students succeed. Our administration team is wonderful to work with. 

What is do you enjoy doing when you aren’t at work?  

When I'm not a work I like hanging out with my friends and family, especially my daughter, Ella. I take cycle classes multiple times a week at CycleBar Tulsa and in the spring and summer I enjoy planting flowers in my garden and taking care of them.
